Upon entering the Riu tequila I was presently surprised at how clean and big it felt! Check in was a breeze and the porter took our cases to our room (Big walk bless him) We arrived quite late but still managed to grab some food from the buffet restaurant, lots of choice here! We enjoyed the Asian restaurant too, wouldn’t rate the Italian as there wasn’t much choice. Room was clean but bit dated compared to the rest of the hotel, shower is out in the open so would be hard to share a room with family/friends but ok for couples. Loads of entertainment going on during the day and night time for both kids and adults, we usually went out on the night to 5th ave - but the white party was sooo good!! Even during the rain it was a great night. Location is great and can use sister hotels, it’s in a gated community so you do feel safer just that you need a taxi every time you want to go into playa del carmen - taxi to 5th ave cost around 150 - 200 pesos. Taxis always available outside hotel (good tip is to agree a price before getting in taxi. We stayed during hurricane beryl and the staff were amazing at keeping everyone safe, all loose furniture was stored away and we were told to stay in our rooms. The morning after the hurricane the buffet restaurant was open at 10am, hats off to the staff for getting things back to normal so quickly. Hotel does what it says on the tin, I wouldn’t say it’s luxury but is still amazing, the Mexico hotel experience is next level compared to Spain/Greece in Europe. I would stay here again if we got a good price what we did last time, wouldn’t mind trying the Yucatan as it’s right on the beach.

1st time travelling to Mexico and staying at the Tequila, we chose this hotel due to the good reviews. 1st time travelling to Mexico and staying at the Tequila, we chose this hotel due to the good reviews. Firstly Cancun airport is a nightmare, took ages to get through and no rush from them, but this was out of our control. Hotel on arrival looks really lovely, large open foyer entrance, large seating area, ceiling fans are a plenty, the staff are very hard working. Our room was clean and tidy and well maintained by housekeeping daily, fresh towels regular if required, fridge stocked well with drinks and water every day. Minimal sockets so advise would be to take an extension lead. Beds are huge and very comfortable. We had a awful room at the back of the block (29) and the view was of the perimeter fence and trees , not pleasant at all. Although dont think most of the rooms had good views and if you are at the back of the block you wont get a view at all. Buffet restaurants were amazing, so much choice in foods, even the pickiest of people will be fine. Steak and italian a la carte restaurants are also included and you can go as many times as you want on a 1st come first served basis. It also has a 24hr sports bar which is fully air conditioned. Drinks, again personal choice but the cocktails were terrible most of the time, far too strong to enjoy, and if you like a decent pint, Mexican beer is not for you. If you like cocktails take a straw as these are not supplied. Bar staff are also very hard fast workers. We walked down the the gastro bar outside the hotel -turn left, beer was lovely from there and staff welcoming and attentive. Beach is a lovely stroll approx half a mile under cover out of the heat, you can get the local buggy to take you there and back should you need it, but we personally welcomed the walk there and back everyday. The beach is lovely and you can eat at the Yukatan buffet restaurant if needed for lunch. Entertainment - not brilliant, they really try there best and seem to put the effort in but that kind of thing is personal choice. The white party however was very good, they pulled out the stops on this one, a lot of hard work put in to it and staff made a real effort - well done. Although it gets packed as people from other hotels come over for the occasion, bars get very busy. The pools by the hotel are not welcoming, the swim up bar pool in particular, would not even dip my toe in it. We just went to the beach every day instead. Basically, if you want a nice relaxing 5 star hotel as a couple, i don't think this will meet your expectations.
