Sharm el Sheikh: The secret of the Red Sea
Just 500 km away from Cairo, the Red Sea coasts proudly host its main tourist attraction and one of the most famous in Egypt: the vibrant city of Sharm el-Sheikh. Located on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula and near the famous Mount Sinai, this city has become a real parnassus for diving enthusiasts (its impressive reefs are completely breathtaking), or just for those who are looking to relax on its magnificent beaches.
However, the origins of Sharm el-Sheikh are far from what we know today, this huge economic engine. Not many decades ago, this town was no more than a fishing village that, due to its strategic location, was converted into a naval base. Between 1956 and 1957 it was occupied by Israel for military purposes and, later, also between 1967 and 1982, was renamed as Mifratz Shlomo ('gulf of Solomon'). This would come to an end with the Camp David Accords, thanks to which Egypt recovered Sharm el-Sheikh in 1982.
Due to the large volume of tourism (both national and international) and despite its wide hotel offer, it is recommended that you make the reservation well in advance during high season or if the visit coincides with some of the main local festivities.
There are currently many options to get to the city and start enjoying its natural attractions and its full range of leisure services and activities. If you travel by plane you need to bear in mind that there are currently no direct flights flying from the UK to Sharm el Sheikh. The most popular airlines that operate flights to Sharm el Sheikh (with 1 or more stops) are Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines and EgyptAir, with stopovers in Istanbul or Cairo. Other low cost airlines such as Ryanair, WizzAir or EasyJet may operate half of the trip.
Egyptair operates several daily flights from Cairo, as well as some weekly flights from Luxor. Likewise, this company also offers trips from some European cities.
Another popular way to get to this city is by coach. Several buses leave from Cairo on a daily basis, and also operate the return route from Sharm el-Sheikh. Check out the coach companies such as Go Bus and Blue Bust. Similarly, you can also take a bus from other Egyptian cities, such as Dahab , Nuweiba, Suez and Taba. Please note that if you chose this means of transport, bear in mind that military controls are usually carried out on the road, so it is necessary to always have your passport with you.
