Explore Italy's two 'capitals' on a single sightseeing tour by rail

This train journey will give you a fascinating insight into the two "leading cities" of Italy: Rome, its official capital; and Milan, its financial and industrial capital.

Known as the "Eternal City", Rome is an authentic open-air museum that fuses the beauty of ancient times with the attractions of Renaissance, Baroque and modern Rome. Stroll through its historic centre - declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO - and discover some of the most impressive monuments of ancient Rome. Among its classic treasures are the Colosseum and the Pantheon, a building that changed the course of world architecture. Another of our recommendations is to imitate Indiana Jones while walking along the Via dei Fori Imperiali and admiring the forums of Caesar, Augustus and Trajan. Much of the appeal of Rome lies in its magnificent squares, such as Piazza Venezia, Campidoglio, Popolo, Piazza della Rotondo, Minerva, and - of course - Piazza Spagna, with its fabulous steps. It's also home to the Vatican City and its Sistine Chapel, the legendary Fontana di Trevi, the Castel Sant'Angelo, the Villa Borghese, and the Capitoline Museums...

And then it's 'all aboard' to take the train from the Italian capital to the city of Milan. Sit back and admire the stunning scenery of bella Italia as it passes by the window. And then it's time for Milan, a true paradise for shopping lovers. Capital of fashion and design, it boasts a never-ending range of stores, artisan workshops, avant-garde outlets, showrooms and high-end boutiques.

Make sure you take a leisurely stroll around the glamorous Quadrilatero d'Oro! Must-sees among Milan's architectural and artistic heritage include the Piazza del Duomo, with the incredible Cathedral; the Royal Palace and the entrance arch to the Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery; the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie, which houses the priceless "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci; and the Teatro de La Scala, one of the most important opera houses in the world. And make sure you explore the bohemian and artistic Navigli, a buzzing waterfront area where great food, art, nightlife and a fantastic atmosphere are guaranteed.

  • Explore Rome at your own pace and without standing in long lines with the OMNIA Vatican and Rome Card that offers free and skip-the-line access to the main attractions of Rome and the Vatican (the Colosseum, Roman Forum, St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel) as well as allowing unlimited public transport access. The card includes free admission to the following points of tourist interest: Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, Basilica of St. John Lateran, Mamertine Prison, Rome Tourist Bus (3 days) and St. Peter's Basilica. In addition to the above you can choose two of the following attractions: the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, Capitoline Museums, Castel Sant'Angelo and/or Borghese Gallery. Another option is the Roma Pass card, a tourist card that allows you to access the main attractions at a discount and use unlimited public transport for 2 or 3 days. In addition to the discounts themselves, the Colosseum has a queue reserved for cardholders, which will save you from its long lines. These can be purchased at tourist information booths and at all participating museums and sites.
  • Triple rooms in Europe are generally rooms with twin beds or a double, in which a folding bed is installed to accommodate the third person. Due to the inconvenience this causes, we advise against using this option as far the possible.
  • Check-in time at the hotel on the day of arrival depends on each establishment, but in no case will it be before 3:00 p.m., unless otherwise indicated.
  • A credit card is considered a guarantee, so sometimes you will need one for check-in at hotels.
  • Hotels usually have cots available. Otherwise, babies will have to share a bed with an adult.
